What is FIPPS?

The Fair Information Practice Principles (FIPPS) are a set of principles created in 1974 by the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare.  They are the basis of several privacy frameworks worldwide, including the U.S. Privacy Act, the OECD Privacy Principles, the Canadian PIPEDA, and the APEC Privacy Framework.

The principles are:

  1. Transparency
  2. Individual Specification
  3. Data Minimization
  4. Use Limitation
  5. Data Quality and Integrity
  6. Security
  7. Accountability and Auditing
