What is the EU-US Privacy Shield?

The EU-US Privacy Shield is an agreement framework designed by the European Commission and the U.S. Department of Commerce that allows for transfer of personal data from the EU to the U.S. by participating companies. To participate, companies must certify that they meet Privacy Shield principles. Companies not within the jurisdiction of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, such as health care, financial services and non-profit institutions, cannot use the Privacy Shield as a basis for data transfer.
